Hamilton (1-2) at BC (0-3)
The Ticats seem to have turned a corner in Week 3, grabbing their first win of the season, dominating the Roughriders 33-3 with the physical and fast style of play they have been preaching. For the second straight week, the Tabbies meet a desperate, winless team.
The Lions have struggled to get a first down so far this year, suffering from injuries, have given up 56 first-half points and currently hold the CFL’s worst run defence. A quick Hamilton start — possibly with the feet of Avon Cobourne — could bury the Lions if Kevin Glenn can repeat his confident play of a week ago.
The Pick Hamilton
Saturday, 4 p.m.
Winnipeg (2-1) at Toronto (1-2)
The road-weary Argonauts finally play at home after three games away. After another lacklustre offensive showing last week, quarterback Cleo Lemon will have fans screaming if he doesn’t step up at home. He must improve his energy within the offense, not an easy task facing Winnipeg’s Odell Willis, the CFL sack leader who is emerging as one of the best pass rushers around. Argos tailback Cory Boyd is still out, so Chad Kackert must shake off last week’s crushing goal-line fumble to carry the load. The wildcard for the Bombers will be quarterback Buck Pierce, who believes he’ll play after a thigh injury suffered last week. The Bombers stuck it to Toronto two weeks ago in Winnipeg, so the Argos are eager to strike back at home.
The Pick Toronto
Saturday, 7 p.m.
Edmonton (3-0) at Calgary (2-1 )
The tables have really turned on this rivalry, one that has often been a cakewalk for Calgary with scores like 52-5 and 56-10 last season. The surprising undefeated Eskimos look like a cohesive group, thanks in large part to commanding quarterback Ricky Ray, the CFL’s leading receiver in Fred Stamps, and the three-headed monster at running back with Daniel Porter, Jerome Messam and Calvin McCarty. The Stamps can’t say the same offensively, and John Hufnagel stated his impatience this week with low production from his vets. Henry Burris, Ken-Yon Rambo, Nik Lewis and Joffrey Reynolds will need to shine this week, particularly since Ray and his crew have made a habit of wearing out opposing defences with long drives.
The Pick Edmonton
Sunday, 7 p.m.
Saskatchewan (0-3) at Montreal (3-0)
You are not likely to see a thrilling rematch between Grey Cup rivals this time. The struggling Roughriders are still grasping for that first win, but it’s not likely to come this week, not after they managed to score just three points during last week’s meltdown in Steeltown and quarterback Darian Durant struggled with ball security. And not against the reigning Grey Cup champs who are coming off a dominant win and a record-breaking night for quarterback Anthony Calvillo. Brandon Whitaker proved why he deserves to take over for the departed Avon Cobourne in the backfield, and he could well have another 100-plus rushing yard night on Sunday.
The Pick Montreal
