Canucks’ Malhotra to miss Game 1
Vancouver Canucks centre Manny Malhotra will not play in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday.
Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told The Globe and Mail that Malhotra is out for the opener against the Boston Bruins, but that the NHL club still hopes he will be able to return at some point in the series.
Gillis created a lot of confusion Tuesday when he said Malhotra was not cleared to play, which contradicted head coach Alain Vigneault’s characterization of Malhotra’s status on Saturday.
“I think Alain meant that he was cleared for full practice and contact,” Gillis said Wednesday. “It usually means the same thing [as cleared to play games], but this injury is different.”
Gillis said Malhotra will not play until a doctor specifically informs the Canucks that it is safe for him to participate in an NHL game. The league has a minimum vision requirement of 20/400, which Gillis said that Malhotra would pass.
“Manny is the same as yesterday: day-to-day, he’s not skating today,” Vigneault said Wednesday morning.
