High school girls soccer: Mentor’s attack stifles Chagrin (with video)
Considering the quality being generated in the attack and subsequent lack of dividends, anyone wearing Mentor red Saturday at Chagrin Falls could reasonably have been seeing red as well.
The totality of said quality was high — so high, in fact, that Cardinals coach Meagan Howell wasn’t sure she wanted to know.
Thanks to the last 20 minutes, though, it wasn’t all for naught.
Kayla Gabor scored in the 58th minute and Amber Seaman added a late strike to give Mentor a 2-0 victory in the annual renewal of one of the area’s better longtime nonconference rivalries.
How good were the Cardinals (2-0) in the offensive third? It was to the tune of a gaudy 22 shots on target and 15 corner kicks, including 10 after halftime, as they showed good pace and mixed their service efficiently.
To their credit, Chagrin goalkeeper Leslie Hoye (20 saves) and her backline turned in a smart, organized effort to keep it scoreless deep into the second half.
“I think we had a good start in the first half, and then we kind of had a bad middle,” Howell said.
“Then we came out strong at the end of the first half. I think we really rebounded in the second half and had a much better, solid all-around 40 minutes, as opposed to being on and off like we were in the first half.
“We’ve been working all week on getting forward and getting forward with numbers. We’re doing that. Now we just have to work on finishing a little bit more consistently.”
