High school football: Mayfield plays big at stadium (with three videos)

Mayfield sophomore running back Anthony Canganelli is generously listed at 5-foot-8, 175 pounds.

But on the biggest football stage in Northeast Ohio on Saturday, Canganelli performed more like he was 10 feet tall and bullet-proof.

And his teammates followed that lead by coming up huge when it counted most in an impressive 37-21 win over Medina in the first half of the Charity Game doubleheader at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Canganelli sparked his team early with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, added a 4-yard TD run, recovered a teammate’s fumble to prevent a turnover and helped the Wildcats chew up the clock in the second half of the victory.

Canganelli’s afternoon earned him MVP honors, but more importantly, it helped a team with some new faces gain some much-needed momentum on the first weekend of 2011.

“I’m ecstatic right now,” Canganelli said. “I have to thank the offensive line and all my teammates. Everybody stepped up.

“Last year, we were 6-4, and today we come out with a bang and win a big game at Cleveland Browns Stadium. This is huge for us.”

It was all about coming up big for Mayfield on Saturday, and in the first half, it was all about overcoming big plays by Medina.

Justin Boncheck opened the scoring for Mayfield with a 39-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with 7:09 to play in the first quarter. The next two kicks of the game resulted in touchdowns.
