Legends’ true class puts Tiger to shame

Tiger Woods remembers precisely where he was the day Jack Nicklaus clinched the greatest victory of his career.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of arguably the most exciting Sunday in US Masters history in April 1986, when Nicklaus became the oldest winner at Augusta National.

Back then, it was considered improbable for a man of 46 to win a Major — certainly the way Jack did it, compiling a sensational final-round 65 to eclipse Greg Norman and Tom Kite by one stroke and don the famous Green Jacket for a record sixth time.

Tiger, just 10 at the time, recalls “watching at home with my dad. We’d always go and play (golf) in the morning, then come back in the afternoon.

Mancuso wins giant slalom for 12th national title

WINTER PARK, Colo. (AP) – Julia Mancuso added to her national record with her 12th win at U.S. championships Friday, turning in a swift second run on soft snow to beat Sarah Schleper in the giant slalom.

Trailing after the opening run, Mancuso held nothing back on the bumpy course. The skier from Squaw Valley, Calif., finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 21.61 seconds to capture her third straight U.S. giant slalom title.

Mancuso moved ahead of Andrea Mead Lawrence last spring for most national crowns by an American, a mark that had stood for 55 years.

Schleper, of Vail, Colo., had the top time after the first run and led Mancuso by 1.52 seconds.

Swinging the blues

He plays a game with which I am not familiar! The late, great Bobby Jones was first to utter those words in 1965 after watching Jack Nicklaus romp to victory in the Masters, smashing Ben Hogan’s 12-year-old tournament scoring record in the process.

Thirty-two years later, an awestruck Nicklaus passed on precisely the same compliment to Tiger Woods in the wake of his mould-breaking first Major championship victory at Augusta National in 1997.

Conversely, it’s tempting to suggest that during last Thursday’s shocking first-round 80 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Graeme McDowell played a game with which many of us are all too familiar.

Might we apply the same logic to the second-round 80 on Friday at the Open de Andalucia which ensured Shane Lowry would be free to spend the entire weekend practising in Malaga?

Kearney, Deneen grab U.S. moguls titles

STRATTON MOUNTAIN, VT — World Cup champion Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) stormed down the course to victory, earning her third U.S. moguls title at the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships Friday at Stratton Mountain. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) stood atop the men’s podium to clinch his first U.S. Championship title.

“It’s really satisfying. I’ve put pressure on myself today because coming into to U.S. Championships with a World Cup title makes me feel like I am obligated to win,” explained the Vermont-native Kearney. “But that doesn’t make it easier. It’s still a really competitive field.”

The combination of a gigantic back flip off the top jump, a smooth mute grab 360 on the lower hit and a blazing fast time, Kearney ended the season in the manner she started it – on top.
