Tiger Woods has sacked his long time caddie, New Zealander Steve Williams.
Williams has worked for the former number one golfing star for 13 years.
It’s reported Williams was shocked at his sacking.
Mr Williams says he’ll now work fulltime for Australian Adam Scott.
Williams expressed strong disappointment at his axing by former world No.1 Woods after 13 highly successful years, especially after he stuck by Woods after his sex scandal and injury woes.
But the 47-year-old New Zealander said he was excited to be working with another Australian, having started his career with greats Peter Thomson and Greg Norman.
While Woods has been sidelined indefinitely with injury, Williams has worked for Scott of late, and carried his bag at the last two majors, the US Open and last week’s British Open.
Woods’ decision to terminate his working relationship with Williams ends one of the most successful partnerships the golfing world has seen.
Williams toted Woods’ bag for 13 of those 14 major victories, as well as for 63 of his 71 PGA Tour titles, earning an estimated $US4.73 million from tournament income alone based on his being paid five per cent of the player’s prizemoney.
As well, Williams would have been on a retainer, meaning the announcement will hit him hard financially.
“Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time,” Williams said.
“I have had the opportunity to work of late for Australian Adam Scott and will now caddy for him on a permanent basis.
“Having started my caddying career with Australian great Peter Thomson and working for Greg Norman in the ’80s I am excited about the future working for another Australian.”
Cutting Williams loose is the latest example of Woods severing ties with his past and follows an inactive period for the 14-time majors winner, who has been sidelined for much of this season.
Williams said the split came after the PGA Tour’s ATT National tournament in Pennsylvania, which ended on July 3.
“He informed me that he needed to make a change,” Williams said.
“After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock.”
Woods used his own website to confirm that he and Williams will not be working together in the future.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change,” Woods said.
“Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments.
