The tee amigos

IRELAND’S Major champions are as different as the four seasons, but they’ll share a common purpose today as they go to war on the shores of Lough Leane in the most eagerly anticipated Irish Open in history.

Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and triple Major-winner Padraig Harrington stand four-square in their determination to restore Irish golf’s national championship to its former glory.

Up to 100,000 people are expected to cram the Killeen Course at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club between today and Sunday’s tournament climax, many of them inspired by the heart-warming recent success of 42-year-old Clarke at the British Open and that mindblowing victory by McIlroy (22) in last month’s US Open at Congressional.

Perhaps 2010 US Open champion McDowell put it best when he said: “It’s going to be very, very exciting to have so many people coming to the Irish Open.

“It’s very tough to get your head around the fact that three Irishmen have won Majors in the past 13 months, you almost end up pinching yourself.

Singh on song in Killarney

Indian Jeev Milkha Singh outshone Ireland’s four major stars with a dazzling eight under par 63 when the Irish Open began in Killarney.

The 39yearold son of a former Olympic sprinter known as ‘The Flying Sikh’ came out of the blocks with an eagle and six birdies to equal the lowest round of his career. He finished two shots clear of Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka, who had eight birdies in his round.

It was six strokes better than Darren Clarke, who recovered well from hitting his first shot as Open champion into a hazard, seven better than US Open champion Rory McIlroy, nine better than last year’s US Open winner Graeme McDowell and 10 better than threemajor winner Padraig Harrington.

Colm Moriarty finished best of the Irish on four under after a 67.

The deal gives the Vikings a veteran quarterback who will play until first-round draft choice Christian Ponder is ready to take over. The deal also includes a conditional sixth-round pick in 2013.

ESPN first reported that the deal was completed.

Ponder tweets that he welcomes McNabb to the team and looks forward to learning from him. But he also says he still plans on fighting for the starting job in Week 1.

“Excited to have McNabb join,” Ponder wrote on Twitter on Wednesday morning, perhaps jumping the gun just a little bit.

Tiger Woods to return to PGA Tour action next week

MIAMI – Tiger Woods, who has missed the last two majors because of leg injuries, will return to competition at next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, the former world number one said on Thursday.

Woods, a seven-times winner of the event at Firestone Country Club, has not played tournament golf since he pulled out of the Players Championship in May after completing just nine holes.

“I’m excited to get back out there,” Woods, 35, said on his official website .

The 14-times major champion hurt his left knee ligaments and Achilles tendon during the Masters in April and has not competed since he withdrew from the Players at Sawgrass on May 12.

He later said he made a mistake in deciding to try and play in the Players Championship five weeks after hurting himself at the Masters, adding that if he had not competed there he would have been fit enough for the next two majors.

Woods, who has not won a major since the 2008 U.S.

Pro Wrestling: CM Punk Destined to Be the Next Face of WWE?

CM Punk is the hottest thing going on in professional wrestling. That is no secret, ladies and gentlemen. That is a fact.

Ever since his epic shoot promo a few weeks ago on Raw—where he bashed the WWE and basically said all the things the IWC have been saying for years now—CM Punk has been the talk of the wrestling world.

And when CM Punk won the WWE Title at Money in the Bank in a huge shocker, pro wrestling and sports entertainment was given a huge jolt of life that it desperately needed.

Unpredictability showered the WWE, with no one having any sort of idea what was going to happen.

Quality wrestling was finally given, as we were shown one of the best WWE PPVs of all time.

And finally, the people we want pushed are finally being pushed, such as Christian and Daniel Bryan.

Now CM Punk has made his return to WWE last Monday on Raw, coming face to face with WWE Champion John Cena with his own championship title, disputing the legitimacy of Cena’s reign.

This is very likely going to lead to an epic champion-vs.-champion match at SummerSlam to determine the true WWE Champion.
