Unheralded American Billy Horschel surged into the lead after the second round of the McGladrey Classic in Georgia with an eagle and two birdies in his last four holes.
Horschel fired a six-under 64 on the par-70 Seaside course for a 36-hole total of 12-under 128.
Webb Simpson, chasing England’s Luke Donald for the US PGA Tour’s money title, nabbed a brace of late birdies for a share of second place.
Overnight co-leader Simpson, winner of two tournaments on the US tour this year, stayed in touch with a three-under 67 for 130, tied for second with Michael Thompson (65).
Nick O’Hern is the best placed Australian after shooting three under to leave him in a tie for fourth on eight under for the tournament.
Simpson said after the second round that he would play the PGA Tour’s final official tournament next week in Florida, where he could find himself in a battle with Donald for the season money crown.
World No.1 Donald, leading Simpson on top of the money list by $US68,971 ($A67,900), said earlier on Friday that he would add the Disney tournament to his schedule.

Uniondale, N.Y. — John Tavares had three goals, including the tiebreaking tally in the third period, and added an assist for the New York Islanders, who beat the New York Rangers 4-2 and gave goalie Evgeni Nabokov a win in his return to the NHL on Saturday night.
The Islanders have won three straight following an opening-night loss and they have Tavares to thank for the past two. <

ATLANTA Ice-cool Bill Haas held his nerve to beat fellow American Hunter Mahan in a thrilling playoff for the season-ending Tour Championship on Sunday and also claim FedExCup honors with its $10 million bonus.
Haas knocked in a four-foot par putt at the third extra hole, the par-three last, to seal victory with Mahan having bogeyed after hitting his tee shot into a greenside bunker and splashing out 15 feet beyond the cup.
The putt earned Haas his third PGA Tour title and a combined total of $11.44 million for winning the richest playoff of all time in golf.
“This just worked out for me,” a smiling Haas said greenside at East Lake Golf Club after pumping his right fist in celebration, removing his cap and embracing Mahan.

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – Newly-crowned road race world champion Mark Cavendish will thrive under the pressure of competing at the London Olympics next year, his British team mate Bradley Wiggins said on Tuesday.
The Manx rider, who already has 20 Tour de France stages to his name, increased the burden of expectation on Sunday by becoming the first male British rider in 46 years to win the world title.
“I think he will thrive on that,” triple Olympic pursuit cycling champion Wiggins told Reuters at the opening of a TeamGB merchandise outlet at a shopping centre on the edge of the Olympic Park in east London.
