Johnson now world number four

Dustin Johnson beat the rain and everyone else at The Barclays to win the US PGA’s opening FedEx Cup playoff event on Saturday.

Johnson shot a 29 on the front nine of rain-softened Plainfield for the second straight day.

He closed with a six-under-par 65 for a two-shot win over fellow American Matt Kuchar.

The Barclays was reduced to 54 holes because of Hurricane Irene. If the third round could not be finished on Saturday, then it would have reverted to a 36-hole event and Kuchar would have been declared the winner.

Kuchar had a one-shot lead going into the round, but he couldn’t hold up against the power and putting of Johnson. Kuchar shot a 68.

Johnson, with his fifth career win, goes to No.4 in the world.

Australians Jason Day (66) and Aaron Baddeley (69) finished equal 13th, seven strokes behind Johnson.
