Foster & Garrido eye long overdue win

England’s Mark Foster and Spaniard Ignacio Garrido, who have not won on the European Tour since 2003, are one shot clear of the field going into the final round of the Johnnie Walker Championship.

The pair are 11 under par after 54 holes at Gleneagles and are three clear of the chasing pack that includes Peter Lawrie, Thomas Bjorn, American Anthony Kang, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and recent Spanish winner Pablo Larrazabal.

Lawrie had two bogeys in the back nine for a round of 71. Simon Thornton and Damien McGrane lie on one under after their third round, while Michael Hoey finished on three over.

While former Ryder Cup player Garrido has had only one top10 finish all season, Foster has had a succession of chances to end his long drought.

He led the BMW International, French Open and Scottish Open in successive weeks this summer, but finished third, second and 14th.

“I’ve become a serial runnerup,” said the Worksop 37yearold, whose professional career began after he helped Britain and Ireland win the Walker Cup against an American team including Tiger Woods in 1995.

“I hit rock bottom when I lost the Spanish Open last year, but I’ve learnt from it and I look beyond winning now. You realise it’s just the way it is. You can’t influence what others do and I’m more interested in taking care of what I’m doing.

“I’m confident that if I do that good things will happen.”

Resuming one behind Garrido, whose last success was the flagship PGA Championship at Wentworth, Foster drew level no fewer than four times during a thirdround 68.
